(Cichorium intybus) A perennial plant that is native to Europe and now found cultivated in the United States, chicory root has long been roasted and then ground to be used as a substitute for coffee and found in coffee blends and herbal “coffee” blends.
This root lends a bittersweet tang to coffee. To make your own New Orleans style coffee blend 1 part chicory root to 3 parts coffee; brew and then add equal parts of hot coffee to hot scalded milk.
